I consider myself a casual gamer. Growing up I mainly played video games with my brother Chris. We had so many epic battles playing Goldeneye on the N64 that first person shooters quickly became my game of choice. In my teen years, I preferred games like Medal of Honor because honestly who doesn’t enjoy killing Nazis? Eventually, I earned enough video game cred (read: vagina) to work at the illustrious Electronic Boutique in both Whitby and Ancaster, Ontario. I’ve wasted countless days, nay weeks, trying to level Night Elves and Undeads in the World of Warcraft – My housemates at school would eventually grow worried about me, as they’d often hear me yelling “That’s right bitch, I’m going feral!” at whichever 12 year old I was currently battling online.
Once I graduated university, my video gaming slowly went away. I’d rather watch TV, or knit a scarf, then pick up a controller but with my husband’s recent purchase of an Xbox Live Account I’ve been getting back into it.
Nothing will show just how patient you are than playing a video game with your significant other. My husband isn’t the best gamer out there, but he is 1000xs better than I am. He somehow manages not to laugh or make snide comments about how moving my body around with the action will not actually make my game play any better and he doesn’t try and grab the controller out of my hands for his turn. He wants me to play more so I can be better and kick serious ass.
The patience my husband demonstrates while I run amok in Halo, get shot over and over again in CoD, or scream very loudly at imminent zombie attacks in Nazi Zombies only confirms what a great partner I have.
For those single ladies out there, if you’re wondering about the character of a potential man in your life just ask him to pass over that controller, pop in his favourite video game and watch his reaction while you play. The results may surprise you! While I hope to one day become the gamer my husband thinks I can be, for now I’ll sit back, hit X a bunch of times and be thankful I married Richiehimself.
