In a perfect world we’d give thanks and remember the sacrifices our Armed Forces have made for us every single day. Unfortunately, life is hectic and a lot of us forget what a huge gift it is to live in a country (for me, both Canada & America) that has such dedicated men and women protecting them.
Luckily for me I have my very own veteran to appreciate! I never thought I would meet a US soldier, let alone marry one, but here we are. I like to joke that I become Richard’s personal slave on day’s like today because he uses his veteran status to get special treatment from me (back massages, bringing home Burger King for his dinner, exempting him from having to make me dinner…etc…) but in all honesty he deserves that and much more.
My veteran served two tours in Iraq, the first being a long and dangerous 16 month tour that took him to both Mosul and Baghdad. The deployment was long and difficult for me as the worrying & frantic girlfriend back home, but I can’t even begin to imagine how hard it was for Richard and his fellow soldiers. Richard’s second tour was enraging as he was recalled from Inactive Ready Reserve and was sent back to Iraq during our entire first year of marriage. Thankfully Iraq was much more stable (as stable as Iraq gets!) during his 2nd tour, so the alert levels were set to mellow-yellow.
I’d like to share some of my favourite pictures of my veteran and say THANK YOU to all of the veterans who have worked so hard and risked so much for us.
