We did it, you guy! The potshack is no more. New readers to my blog may be scratching their heads, wondering what a potshack is. Well it’s pretty self explanatory. It’s a greenhouse that the original owners built in the 1970’s but has since fallen into disrepair, so much so that the last owners re-purposed it as their preferred place to smoke weed. I am making all of this up of course but let’s remember I live in Ann Arbor and why wouldn’t they have smoked in it?
The pot shack was a huge eyesore and it provided the only access we had to the rest of our yard. I hated having to go through the shack in order to sit outside and it blocked a lot of the sunlight into our kitchen. We knew from Day 1 that the shack would be torn down and was able to work a seller’s concession into our purchase contract because of it.
Little did we know Ann Arbor area contractors wanted anywhere from $2000-3000 to demolish it and that’s not including the removal of the cinder blocks holding it up. MADNESS, I say. Something tells me contractors in SE Michigan like to partake in ganja too! We didn’t have to deliberate very long before we decided this was a job that we’d (read: my husband, father and husband’s friend) could do ourselves. I’m so thankful that my dad and mother were willing to come down from Canada to help us remove it.
While the men were hard at work my mother and I went to the market, headed to the mall for a Banana Republic sale, grabbed lattes at Starbucks and hit up Target.
After working all Friday night and throughout the day on Saturday, the pot shack was no more and I couldn’t be happier. Our backyard currently looks like this and while it’s not perfect we do get to enjoy sunlight shining into the kitchen, I don’t have to deal with scary bugs dropping from the ceiling onto my head while I walk into my yard and the dogs have so much more room to run.
Our next big project….paining the living area! Details to come. Would you have smoked weed in that greenhouse? What do you think we should do in the yard now that it’s gone?
