Jenna Morrison and her unborn baby were killed in a cycling accident while riding to pick up her son from school accident on November 7th. The below picture is of her grieving husband, who appeared with family and friends at the site where she was killed. The reason I’m posting this is because comments on The Star’s article suggested the picture is exploitative; they say the news paper should leave her partner Mr Schuck to grieve in private.
I don’t mean to bum my readers out but these comments struck a chord with me. Jenna Morrison and her baby died tragically and their deaths were preventable. Drivers have a responsibility to share the road with cyclists, because being aggressive on the road is what causes tragedies like this. I support The Star’s decision to run this picture on the front page because it puts the pain and horror of preventable cycling accidents in your face, forcing you to think about your own driving habits.
I always try to share the road with cyclists in Ann Arbor – a big cycling community – but I’ll admit I can do better. We can all do better. We can drive a bit slower, we can give them the space they need and and we can remain cool when they don’t share the road with us.
