Before I get started on today’s NaBloPoMo’s writing prompt can I just talk about how amazing the guest poster is? The one and only Ricki Lake! Go Ricki, Go Ricki, Go Ricki! Love. Her. If you haven’t seen “The Business of Being Born” yet you should, if only to see Ricki give birth in her bathtub.
Rickie asked us to post about facing and overcoming our fears. I asked my husband if he could help me think of fears I’ve overcome and he *literally* replied: I don’t think you’ve overcome anything. You’re still afraid of spiders. Hmm, he has a point.
I actually had a really hard time coming up with something. Not because I don’t have any fears but rather it’s rare I overcome them (see above re: Spiders). After some mild reminiscing, I decided that moving to America was something I was afraid of and something I obviously overcame, having been in Michigan since March of 2010 and doing just fine so far.
I’ve blogged previously about how moving away from Canada was one of the hardest things I’ve done. Leaving my friends and family is still something I struggle with, but being in a new country has also afforded me a lot of opportunities to grow as a person. Today at work I had a new person shadowing me and when she found out I was from Canada she seemed a little surprised and said “Oh! How do you like it here?! Is it different?!” I smiled and replied “Yes, it’s actually not much different from home.”
What fears have YOU overcome?
