I’ve joined a music trivia team – well call ourselves “Let’s Get Quizzical” – and while it’s a lot of fun and gives me a reason to get out of the house on a Wednesday night to enjoy good company and a couple Strongbows it has also shown me I need to brush up on my music knowledge! The trivia is essentially 5 rounds consisting of 15 songs per round and it’s done in a “name that tune!” format. I’m definitely the weakest member of the team and I’m OK with that since it gives me the drive to get better. I want to be the one who knows Cherry Pie is by Warrant or that Jimmy Page founded Led Zeppelin because I literally just Googled both of those facts.
When did my musical knowledge go so horribly wrong? Sure I know my Depeche Mode, Arcade Fire & Britney Spears like any normal person but play some classic rock or 80’s hair bands and I’m completely lost. I guess I assumed my music trivia would be just as badass as my movie knowledge . When I was younger I listened to a lot of Rod Stewart. My mom had his concert on VHS and I’d play it over and over but I think I enjoyed it more for the kilts and soccer balls than the music. I later graduated to a Spice Girls addiction and any other bad pop music My first real concert was KORN at the Air Canada Center in Toronto. I was in grade 9 and thought Freak On A Leash was the greatest song known to man. Thankfully I grew out of my KORN stage, if anyone can truly leave behind the sweet sounds of nu-metal.
Music trivia has definitely made me want to learn more about music – especially the classics. I’m sure my mother in law could tell me a thing about Fleetwood Mac and my own mother could enlighten me on CCR. Either way, I’ve decided I need to broaden my musical horizons. I’m all about being a well rounded person and no longer want to be the girl at the table who can’t distinguish between Peter Gabriel and… I don’t know… See I can’t even think of someone similar to Peter Gabriel! This is terrible!
To start me off on my journey I decided to look up the #1 song the week of my birth – This actually came in handy at trivia one night when Miss Aparna got the song right since it was from the week of her birth.
According to some sketchy looking websites, the top song for the week of my birth was….
