Wednesday’s episode of Top Chef, the penultimate before the finale, had a very interesting elimination challenge. Each chef-testant got assigned to a world famous chef and had to prepare what they would want for their last meal. You can’t help but think about food, want to make food, want to smell food, want to eat food when watching Top Chef. I don’t even eat meat but something about the presentation of the food and the way they describe it makes my mouth water.
Last meals are such an odd thing. For the most part most of us don’t get to choose what exactly our last meal is. I hope I live to be so old that my last meal is fed to me in liquid form. A while back I had this morbid fascination with last meals and would read what prisoners awaiting executions had chosen. Don’t ask me why I did this, but I found it very touching. A lot of the meals they would pick were very simple and “homey.” I do not believe the last meals are available anymore on the Death Row website.
Sorry if I have depressed you with all of the dealth row talk, but last meals are VERY important to a lot of people. You know you’re going to meet your maker and you have to pick your #1 favourite meal? That’s a lot of pressure. So, what would I want to eat?
Real pizza, straight from Italy. White flour crust, tomato sauce, fresh buffalo mozzearella and basil – keeping it simple. To drink? An ice-cold Canada Dry Ginger Ale. Don’t offer me Schweppes either because that’s bullshit. It’s Canada Dry or bust. Dessert would have to be Tira Misu. I would usually go with a delicious creme brulee but it wouldn’t give me the same comfort a piece of Tira Misu offers. This last meal would leave you thinking I was Italian, but that’s not surprising because Italian food is – in my opinion – the universal comfort food.
What would you want your last meal to be?
Popcorn
Or applesauce
What about applesauce on popcorn?
Yum. I think Pizza would probably be mine too. Or a club sandwich smothered in honey mustard.
Jills Homemade Mac and Cheese….and a 24 of coorslight to numb the feeling of meeting the big guy
